The artwork we hang on our walls, and how we decorate our homes is deeply personal. In order to be motivated enough to purchase a piece of art and hang it on my wall at home it had better make me smile every time I look at it. Rachel Ann Austin's work fits this criteria perfectly. Whether it be a tent, a moose, a poppy or a trailer these little pieces of happiness are just begging to be purchased.
Here is a little bit about Rachel's story:
"In 2001, I graduated with a degree in Management and Finance. In college I took one drawing class as an elective and loved it but didn't really think about it much more than that. One day the head of the art department stopped me in the lunch room and told me that I really had a gift and that it was my responsibility to use it. I was surprised by the boldness of that statement, he wasn't even the professor in my drawing class. It stuck with me as I worked office jobs after graduation and I started painting after work.
After a few years, I started working part time at a local art supply store in Portland and was able to get my art eduction through learning about art materials and supplies. I still love helping people out with their art projects. There I started showing some of my paintings. My first group show, an employee group show in the store, I sold my first painting. I was so giddy and excited that someone, a stranger, liked my work that I wrapped up the wrong painting. The woman had to come back the next day and exchange the piece for the one she actually wanted."
