Day trip from SLC: Antelope Island
While we were in Salt Lake City over the holidays we escaped to Antelope Island for the day. When I think of Salt Lake City my thoughts turn toward mountains, Temple Square and big, wide streets. After having visited Antelope Island, I will now add roaming herds of bison to the list.
Antelope Island is the largest of ten islands in the Great Salt Lake and is home to free ranging bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope and many other animals. The island is accessed via a seven mile causeway and provides hiking, camping and plenty of room to explore. We visited over the holidays and had the place virtually to ourselves. I would love to plan a trip back there in the Summer to spend a couple days camping and hiking around the area.

Between the holidays, the snow and the cold temperatures I think it kept people away. As a result, we had the roads, the visitor's center and one amazing sunset all to ourselves.
