French Polynesia: Mo'orea

With Valentine's Day less than a month away I have been reminiscing about some of the most romantic trips we have ever taken. For the trip of a lifetime might I suggest a vacation to French Polynesia, more specifically to the island of Mo'orea. Mo'orea is located eleven miles northwest of Tahiti, you can access the island either by taking a ferry or a short fifteen minute flight. When possible we like to travel like the locals, so us and several dozen elementary school children boarded the ferry one perfectly beautiful morning bound for Mo'orea.

A Valentine treat

A quick and easy way to create a festive Valentine treat is to decorate the top of cupcakes. You could either make your own cupcakes or purchase some from your local bakery. With a cookie cutter as your guide you can easily create XOs or hearts in a couple of minutes and turn regular cupcakes into festive ones.

A day in Park City, Utah

One sunny day while we were in Utah, we set out to go snowshoeing at Canyons. Once we rode the gondola up we realized the only way to go snowshoeing was to take a tour. Say what? With a $60-$70 price tag per person we decided we would find somewhere else to go because snowshoeing should be free. (i'm just saying…..)

After we enjoyed our free snowshoeing we headed to downtown Park City to refuel and do a little window shopping. We ate lunch at Bandits Grill and Bar and had the yummiest pulled pork. We also did some window shopping and two stores in particular stood out to us: Prospect, a men's and women's clothing store and Root'd, a home decor and interior design boutique. It was a lovely day and I reminded how much sunshine, good company and fresh air make for the perfect day.

Seeing your surroundings through new eyes

One of the biggest perks of becoming a parent is the opportunity to see the world through new eyes. Life is just more fun with everything is approached with an enthusiastic smile or wide eyes. For those of us who are not currently housing an adorable baby or toddler what other ways can this child like wonder and curiosity be infused in our own lives?

Invite someone along to do something you frequently do.

Valentine in a box

Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to show the important people in your life you are thinking about them. Here is a round up some perfect ideas for your friend, sister, niece or girlfriend who lives far away, but you still want her to know you care.

Fringy cards

After the holidays there are so many excellent reasons to send cards. Notes to hostesses, thank you notes for gifts, and the ongoing need for birthday cards.  Instead of rushing out to the store, why not make these  festive handmade fringy cards. All you will need is the following:

Remembering Grandpa

Few people were as constant as my grandparents in my life. Growing up, we had the unique opportunity to be the only grandchildren on my mother's side. We were spoiled, loved and cared for in a way which would not have been possible had there been more of us. We knew where we stood and that we were a priority. I figured everyone talked to their grandparents on a weekly basis and had them visit for months at a time. It was not until I was older I realized this was not the norm.

Snowshoeing to Dog Lake

Christmas Day was blue skies and sunshine.  Since we had already celebrated Christmas a few days prior we spent Christmas morning snowshoeing up to Dog Lake. In Washington, our mountain passes have received virtually no snow this season, so we were delighted to find snow, Icicles, and snowshoeing trails galore. As we started out on the trail Cameron was asked to be interviewed by a local news station. Not one to be camera shy, he eagerly talked about our preparations and plans for avoiding the dangers of avalanches. Later that evening, much to his delight he had made it on the local news.

Winter blues

Something has been amiss this Winter. It wasn't until snow was swirling around us while we snowshoed that I realized what it was. As much time as I devote to being outdoors, I have missed the magical feeling of being surrounded by snow. I have longed to be in my winter wonderland, a place so familiar and inviting my heart skips a beat as soon as we arrive.

A day in Seattle

Sometimes you need a day without structure. A day set aside to breathe fresh air, soak up sunshine and only have a vague sense of time based on the setting sun. Last Saturday, we enjoyed one such day. We walked through the arboretum to Foster Island and then continued along the Montlake Cut. We enjoyed fresh tomato soup, reuben sandwiches and peanut butter toffee cookies at Madison Kitchen. Before meeting our friend for dinner at Paquito's we walked around Melrose Market and discovered our new favorite store, Glasswing. As we walked back to our car enriched by both food and friendship it was easy to see; life just the two of us not only can be good, it is good.

New Year's Eve in downtown Seattle

New Year's Eve always seems like a lot of hype and pressure to do something exciting. This year Cameron was feeling a tad under the weather, so we managed to head downtown to see the fireworks just as the fog decided to roll in. Despite its best efforts, the fog was no match for Cameron. He snapped these photos and I think they are pretty rad.

Trim the tree and everything in between

It might seem a tad late to still be sorting through images from Christmas, but taking a vacation in the midst of the holidays equates to overflowing memory cards. At Christmas time I typically think of home and hearth, but this year we stayed at hotel and ordered plenty of room service. The thing I love about traveling during the holidays is seeing different versions of holiday cheer. Everyone has a different way of decorating for the holidays and hotels are no exception.

A winter day's walk

This year, our Christmas celebration coincided with a fairly large snow storm a couple days prior. The combination of snow, a midday walk and quality time with our eldest niece made for a lovely afternoon. There is something intoxicating about tromping around in the crisp air, creating fresh tracks in the snow and taking time to appreciate every leaf or berry. Snow temporarily eliminates the clutter and allows for full concentration on the beauty. Snow is a novelty where we live, so when it snows the world feels like a more magical place.

Winter walk through Temple Square

Christmas this year was spent in Salt Lake City.  It had been ages since we last visited and we were fortunate enough to stay a couple blocks from Temple Square. Our prime downtown location meant we were able to take in all the sights and sounds of the season the city had offer. On the evening we arrived we made our way over to Temple Square, it had snowed enough to shut down the airport two days before, so there was a thick blanket of white covering the ground. It was late enough in the evening the Christmas lights had already been turned off, so between the brilliance of the temple and brightness of snow the grounds felt particularly magical. Recently my faith has been stretched and pulled, but most importantly I have come to realize its potential to be limitless. I take comfort in believing in something greater than myself and happiness in the thought that families are forever.

Walking boldly into a new year

have always been a goal oriented person. So when we carved out a little time to write down our goals as a couple for the upcoming year it made me down right giddy for what lies ahead. A new year, a fresh start. Bring it, I say!

Although I won't be sharing any specific goals, this year I am looking forward to focusing more on our dreams and eliminating the clutter both mentally and physically from our lives. This past year I allowed self doubt, negativity and the judgment of others to get the best of me. Looking back, I realize just how much I allowed life to beat me down. In the new year, I plan to recapture my appetite for living with a few new ventures, one big trip and enough good memories to fill a lifetime.

Makrbox

This year I have focused my attention on becoming more aware of all the wonderful "makers" who live, breathe and create right in my own backyard. When choosing to purchase something I make a conscious choice to first look locally to fill my need. I realize the growing importance of reducing my carbon footprint, but equally important a ton of cool things are manufactured right here in Seattle or the Pacific Northwest. When I stumbled upon Makrbox I was ecstatic because their vision paralleled mine.
